At least 2 officers shot in New Jersey city, authorities say

Authorities said at least two police officers were shot in a New Jersey city on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials did not provide details about their conditions but CNN reported that both officers are stable.

The FOP added that reports indicate the gunman is armed with a rifle "and is actively shooting at law enforcement."

The footage shows a large police presence.

Gov. Phil Murphy said he is "closely monitoring an unfolding situation in Newark."

"I am in touch with local authorities and the State is providing resources as requested," the governor noted on Twitter. "We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe."

FBI Newark is assisting with what the agency described as "an active situation." The FBI advised the to avoid the area around Chancellor Avenue and Van Velsor Place.

In nearby Belleville, Mayor Michael Melham said his police department "has been in touch with their counterparts in Newark to offer assistance. We stand ready to support Newark in whatever capacity needed. In the meantime, here in Belleville we will be increasing patrols along the Newark/Belleville border."

Police said the suspect remains at large.
