Amazon to open warehouse in Altoona, spokesperson confirms

A spokesperson for the Seattle-based company Amazon confirmed to 6 News that it plans to open a warehouse facility in Altoona.

The spokesperson, Sam Fisher, says that the facility will operate as a delivery station, serving as the "final stop" in the delivery process.

Fisher says packages will be sorted and loaded onto Amazon's delivery vans at the Altoona facility, which will be located at the site of the former General Cable Building at 3121 Pleasant Valley Blvd.

A date as to when the warehouse will open has not yet been decided upon, however, Fisher says that Amazon plans to open the facility "soon."

I can see it being beneficial to a lot of business around here. It brings more money to the area and gives more people jobs that are in need of them. The only cons I can really think of are -- I guess more direct traffic in the area. But if they do it properly, I don’t see any issue with it," said Ezra Hoover, a local business employee.Amazon certainly offers that opportunity for people to try something new, to add a new part time job. They have told us they are hiring part time initially, but they promote from within. They expect those jobs to turn into full time opportunities," said Gwen Fisher, the PA Career Link Administrator for Blair County.

Officials have also not yet confirmed how many jobs will be created by the opening of the warehouse.

"We welcome Amazon to Altoona’s business community and look forward to the employment opportunities that they will bring," says Steve McKnight, the president and CEO of the Altoona-Blair County Development Corporation.
